Exhibition Bright Prospects
This exhibition brings together contemporary artistic positions that are only superficially concerned with visual stimuli and aesthetic means of expression. Gloss is something we associate with reflective, radiant surfaces; it stands for smooth, clean, frictionless. Smoothness appears elegant and elegance is admired. Gloss and glamor are closely related and are synonymous with beauty. But beautiful appearances can be deceptive.
As smoothness offers no resistance, it requires disruption, a break or a transformation if you want to respond artistically to the challenges of our times. The artists in the exhibition do this in different ways, sometimes quietly and subliminally, then also ironically, with humor or sarcasm. But initially there is the tempting first impression: “What bright prospects!” This exclamation can be understood differently in various contexts – as hopeful on the one hand, as pessimistic on the other. While in its literal meaning, it conveys an optimistic view, when taken ironically, the “bright prospects” become a commentary on a gloomy or hopeless situation. Such a negative interpretation reveals people’s tendency to use humor as a coping mechanism in difficult times.
However, both perspectives hold out the prospect of better times in the future, because those who reflect are at best on the right path.
